Surajkund - The craft-fair

Surajkund Craft fair is organized by the Department of Tourism, Ministry of Tourism and Culture-Government of India in collaboration with Haryana Tourism, in the month of February, every year. First celebrated in 1981, the fair continues to be a strong platform for skilled artists and craftsmen from abroad to display their skilled crafts and art work derived from their rich culture and tradition. Also various artists from all over the country display the rich traditional products of India in the typical rural setting that bring alive the age-old living crafts tradition.

The festival ground turns colorful with a number of make-shift stalls, that exhibits range of hand loom and Indian craft items, offering visitors the exquisite paintings, textiles, wood stock, ivory work, pottery, terracotta, stonework, lacquer work, mirror embroidery work and cane and grass work. Visitors can find the varied handicraft treasure here at one place. Interestingly fair is not only limited to exhibitions of artwork but stages for Natyashala(theater) workshops, musical evenings are also organized, these programs are also accompanied by lip smacking and delicious rural cuisine, adding flavors to this world renowned crafts fair.

International Acclamation of Surajkund craft - fair

The land is ideally suited for all year round happening activities for tourists from India or abroad. Organized every year in February, the Surajkund crafts-fair is a fortnight-long gathering of craftsmen from all over India. The entire fair is set up around the kund or Sun Pool and has a different theme every year. This mega event being an international platform showcase the Indian handicraft items bringing together potters, weavers, wood carvers, metal workers, painters, etc. who have achieved distinction in traditional skills across the country and abroad.

Amidst the display of traditional arts and crafts, you will also find some excellent entertainment. Folk dancers, acrobats, musicians and magicians keep the crowd alive with their excellent performances at the 'Natyashala' (open air theater). In the month of February Surajkund turns into multi colored platform with all cultural activities under one roof for tourists presenting miniature "India" itself.

Famous for a variety of activities one of them the world famous crafts fair, polo, golf, water sports such as Kayaking to musical evenings, open air quizzes complemented with the availability of world famous cuisines from participating stalls. Also, a spot on adventure getaway the land has various sports activities happening too compelling tourists to indulge into sports like polo, golf, water sports and rock climbing in the Surajkund complex.

Surajkund Artists and Shows

During the fair various folk dances, quizzes and musical evenings are held in fan shaped open-air-theater name 'Natyashala' throughout the fortnight. Various artists with painted face and in traditional attire amaze audience and foreign visitors. Apart from craftsmen showcasing their skills and handicrafts products during the Surajkund fair, various folk dance performers, drama artists including Octave dance group from Northeast entertain visitors exhibiting Indian culture. The frequently participating groups include Kaal Belia from Rajasthan, Siddi Goma (Gujarat), Brij Ki Holi & Charkula (UP), Bhangra (Punjab), Been Sapera & Banchari (Haryana), 'Tajik Dances', 'Egyptian Tannoura Dance' and 'Thai Traditional Dances'. Special stalls are organized where patrons are introduced to the traditional foods and sweets of the theme state of the year. The place full of food stalls from participating states and countries indulges food lovers.

Surajkund - The shoppers delight

The best time to shop is during the Surajkund Mela. You will find attractive local products at amazing prices. Some things to look for include mirror encased embroidery, delicate lace work, folk motifs on terracotta forms, metal and cane-ware, bangles, toys and trinkets, exquisite paintings, textiles, wood stock, ivory work, pottery, terracotta, stonework, lacquer work, cane and grass work, traditional shawls, hand made fabrics, wood carved show pieces etc.

Surajkund - A Gastronomical experience

The fair along with its multi cultural episodes is well complemented with various cuisines from cities participating. Visitors to the fair are in for a culinary adventure. During this mini-food festival, you will find delicacies from all over the country. South Indian and North Indian food, spiced rice, snacks, Indo-Chinese food, etc. all find their way to the food stalls during this occasion.
